In preparation for a Path to Strategy or Consulting, we are hosting a feature virtual event on Friday, May 13th with Alex Drummond, the Chief Strategy Officer at American Express.
Following the Strategy vs. Consulting session this week, come meet up with Alex Drummon to learn more about the company, the role of a Chief Strategy Officer, and A Day in the Life of strategy at AMEX since 2021.
Alex Drummond joined American Express as Chief Strategy Officer in July 2021. He is responsible for the company’s medium-to-long term enterprise-wide strategy, running the company’s long-range planning process and ensuring alignment between the enterprise, business unit, and M&A strategies.
Prior to joining American Express, Alex was a Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) with deep experience in payments. He led Payments and Transaction Banking for North America and was part of BCG’s global payments management team. In this role, Alex covered card issuers, networks, merchant acquirers, payment infrastructure players, and fintechs.
Enterprise Strategy is the internal consulting division of American Express. We work directly with the CEO, the executive team, and senior leaders to provide thought leadership and an external perspective on the most important strategic priorities of the company.
Enterprise Strategy grows high-potential colleagues into future leaders at American Express. Our team members develop deep subject matter expertise and leadership skills in stretch roles that unlock their full potential, working collaboratively with senior leaders across the company. Subsequently, our team members transition to take on key leadership roles within the business.

Alex Drummond joined American Express as Chief Strategy Officer in July 2021. He is responsible for the company’s medium-to-long term enterprise-wide strategy, running the company’s long-range planning process and ensuring alignment between the enterprise, business unit, and M&A strategies.
Prior to joining American Express, Alex was a Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) with deep experience in payments. He led Payments and Transaction Banking for North America and was part of BCG’s global payments management team. In this role, Alex covered card issuers, networks, merchant acquirers, payment infrastructure players, and fintechs.
During his time at BCG, Alex also led payments projects in growth strategy, large scale cost transformation, customer journey reimagination efforts, cobrand negotiation and turnaround, and strategic due diligence for both North American and European financial institutions.
Alex holds an MBA from INSEAD in Singapore and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Université Catholique de Louvain. Prior to joining BCG, he spent over four years working in the technology sector.
Alex is an avid soccer fan and lives in Manhattan with his wife and two sons.
